The Miracle of St. Matrona of Moscow

This month we meet a peculiar peasant born in 1881 in a village in Russia. Even though it is completely true, her life almost feels like a fairy tale!

Natalia sat staring out the window at the snow. It was falling hard, covering the huts in her little village. She had been sitting there a long time, and tears stained her pink face. She could hear her two toddlers fighting over a rag doll and the baby crying in the background. She couldn’t make herself move.

There was barely enough food to feed the family that night, but that wasn’t all.

She had just found out she and Dimitri were expecting another baby. How could God provide for them all?

They would have to give it to the orphanage, because they wouldn’t be able to feed it. She stared out the window.

God – though she didn’t know it yet - had other plans.

That night Natalia had a dream. A white bird with the face of a little girl flew up to her and landed on her arm. The little girl’s eyes were closed but her face was full of peace. When Natalia awoke, she knew she was meant to keep the baby. Somehow, God would provide.

When the tiny baby girl was born, she had no eyes, just like the dream. Even so, it was clear that God had sent Matrona for some special purpose.

On her chest, a small, raised birthmark in the shape of a cross rested just where a baptismal cross would rest on a regular person.

On the day of her baptism, the villagers gathered in the church. When she was dunked in the water, a white cloud of smoke arose from her tiny body, and a sweet smell lingered in the air.

As she grew, little Matrona often kept to herself. She played alone or went to sit in the soft silence of the church and pray. As the years passed quietly along, her family often had just enough to meet their needs.

When she was seven years old, her public miracles started in an unexpected way.

One sunny day, Matrona had a surprise for her mama. “We need to prepare for a wedding.”

Natalia had learned to take the girl seriously and did not argue. “Whose wedding?”

I’m going to have a wedding.”

Natalia’s eyes widened but she nodded her assent. “How shall we prepare, my dear?”

Matrona knew exactly how. “I need to receive Holy Communion.”

Even though it was the middle of the week, Natalia sent for the priest.

After uniting herself to Christ with His Body and Blood, little Matrona touched her mama’s arm. “Thank you, Mama. Now I’m ready.”

Natalia watched Matrona walk towards the icon corner, her hand brushing along the wall to guide her steps. She wondered what it all meant but said no more.

The next morning, Natalia thought her daughter looked especially radiant and beautiful, just like a bride. Even Matrona's voice sounded full of love and joy. “I’m ready!”

Natalia tilted her head, looked at Matrona, and wondered what was going on.

“Let’s open the door.” Matrona smiled.

Natalia led her daughter to the door of their hut and pushed it open. She gasped.

A long line of peasants from Sebina and carriages from more distant villages were waiting outside their hut. Matrona pushed past her mother and felt her way to the little garden stool to sit down. Surrounded by flowers, she calmly looked back to her mother. “Open the gate, please.”

Hardly knowing what she was doing, Natalia nodded her head. She opened the gate and the first pair of visitors hobbled in. A little boy with a shriveled leg leaned on his father for support.

“My son had a fever last year. Ever since, he has not been able to walk alone.”

Matrona looked at the bent little boy, who was just about her own age, and spoke softly. “Let’s pray.”

After the prayer, the little boy straightened up.

Natalia's eyes widened as she witnessed the miracle.

Matrona encouraged the boy. “Go ahead, try to put your weight on it.”

He slowly lowered his lame leg until it planted firmly on the ground. He shifted back and forth between the two legs, looking down at them. “Papa! Papa, they’re the same!” His papa picked him up and swung him around. When he put his son back down, the little boy jumped and jumped and shouted and then turned back to where Matrona was sitting among the flowers. “Thank you!”

She smiled at him. “Thank God.”

For the entire day, Natalia watched as people came to talk to little Matrona. Her daughter healed many of them by her prayers. Others poured out their concerns to the little girl, who would then give them just the right advice.

All day long, Matrona sat on the bench and saw into the hearts of the people.

As the sun set, the last of the visitors waved goodbye. Turning towards her mother, Matrona sat beaming, like a bride.

“What was that all about, dear?”

“I told you it was my wedding.” Matrona grinned. “And look at all the gifts.”

Natalia swept her eyes over the ground. Between where she was standing at the door and where Matrona was sitting in the garden, the ground was covered with loaves of bread, bunches of vegetables, bundles of candles, and other thank you gifts.

“See, Mama. God provides!” Matrona blushed in happiness.

Natalia walked over to her daughter. “Yes, He does. Indeed, He does!” She lowered herself to her knees, and hugged Matrona. “And you, my dear, are a dream come true.”
